Inspiring Surf Therapy The dog made it through the waves one last time
The “Surf Dog Ricochet” is a popular Golden Retriever breed known for being therapy dogs and helping people with disabilities to surf. She is very good at what she does, but as she gets older and faces health challenges, surfing becomes more difficult. So her humans decided that a recent adventure would likely be the last time Ricochet rode the waves.
However, Ricochet won’t let her last surfing adventure be forgotten. As always, she made the event unforgettable for the attendees. Although her surfing days are coming to an end, she will continue to inspire fans for years to come.
Surfing for a good cause
Ricochet has been training to support others since she was eight weeks old. She learned some service dog duties, along with how to balance on a boogie board. Then, in 2009, she completed her first wave with someone in need. She helps balance a surfboard while a 14-year-old boy with a spinal cord injury enjoys the waves.
The experience was so rewarding that Ricochet started supporting more people on the surfboard. Before long, the trained therapy dog became known as the “Ricochet Surfing Dog.” Now, Ricochet is 14 years old and she has been surfing for 13 years of her life.

“She’s aged a lot now, so unfortunately she doesn’t want to surf as much as she used to,” said Jose Martinez, who was on her last ride.
Not only did Ricochet age, but he also suffered from kidney cancer and arthritis. Her family doesn’t know many details yet, but they suspect she won’t want to surf for much longer. So they celebrated her last surf as her last in case she didn’t get better.
Ricochet’s Last Trip
Purple Heart recipient Jose Martinez lost an arm and both legs after he stepped on a bomb in Afghanistan. Back in 2014, he started surfing to help him recover, and Ricochet accompanied him on the waves while he was still getting used to it. Now, the proud Martinez is paying off by helping Ricochet ride the waves after all she’s done for him.
“I thought Ricochet could catch a wave or two, but she kept going. She was very happy. It’s a beautiful ending to a beautiful surf story,” said Judy Fridono, the man of Ricochet. “It’s like her story has come to an end. She has helped so many others get on the air over the years, and when she needs help, who better than Jose.”

The older dog looks delighted in all the photos and videos from his last trip. There are some moments where her expression resembles Martinez.
Surfing isn’t as easy for Ricochet as it used to be, and it’s likely she won’t have the strength to continue doing it. So no matter what happens, it’s heartwarming to see her have at least one last surf celebration to lift spirits and delight her many fans.
