After recently announcing the winners and shortlisted entries in Sony World Photography Awards Open Competition 2023the finalists and the shortlist for the competition professional competition has now been published.
Among the finalists in the Documentary Project category was British photographer Tariq Zaidi, who traveled to the Somali capital Mogadishu to capture the chaotic scenes at the Hamar Weyne fish market in the city centre. Here, Zaidi said, hundreds of fishermen sell their catch, including yellowfin, swordfish, marlin, longtail, tuna, skipjack and Spanish mackerel. “Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing civil war and the lack of investment in the sector, the market remains the main source of employment and economic activity,” said Zaidi.
The overall winners of the Open, Professional, Student and Youth competitions will be announced on April 13, while the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition will take place from April 14. 4 to 1 May at Somerset House in London, UK.
