Inscryption’s free “mini-expansion” makes the first act endless

Encode , without a doubt the best game I’ve played this year. It’s creepy, unexpected, and super fun, and now you can play the best part for as long as you want. Developer Daniel Mullins has released a “small expansion” in beta on Steam, (small expansion ahead!) that makes its animal-based card game a unique roguelike experience. set up. Named Kaycee’s Mod, it’s a bit harder than you might have played and also adds new challenges, so you can keep coming back for more.

Mullins said he’s received “numerous requests for a persistent playable version of Season 1 that emphasizes Leshy’s deck roguelike,” and I’m not surprised. While Inscryption is a complete package, that first part is addictive.

In his Coding Reviews, Brendy calls it “a wonderfully designed card game” and a “cursed beautiful creation”. I couldn’t agree more.

Each time you start running in the expansion, you can choose some challenge that will make it more difficult (like reducing your backpack space or taking away the ability to roll cards). Complete a lap with active challenges and you’ll level up to the Challenge Level, which gives you a wider choice of challenges, as well as unlocking new cards and a “developer log” recorded by Kaycee The late Hobbes”.

Kaycee is a character (like another character you see in the game) who has been trying to uncover the secrets of Inscryption. As you play, Leshy mentions her a few times, so it seems like there’s a whole new bit of weirdness underlying this expansion.

The mini expansion is currently in beta On steamand you can access it by going into the game’s properties on your Steam client and entering the code “givemeascensionmode”. As the test progresses, Mullins plans to add new cards, rare items, the remains of Kaycee’s developer log, and the final encounter for those who pass Level 12 of the Trial. challenge.

It’s funny, I won’t go back to Inscryption after my one try, because I don’t want to spoil the experience for myself by overusing it. But now I can just play the first scene load without crashing into the rest of the story, uh oh, I know what I’m going to do when I play obsessively during the holidays.

If you want to learn more about Inscryption, I interviewed Mullins in October on the game’s horror theme and how it scares players into doing things the game shouldn’t do.
