There seems to be no shortage of Chinese automakers entering our market, with another one on the way. It’s called Hycan, and its first products – all electric – are expected to launch sometime in the first quarter of next year.

The Guangzhou-based new energy vehicle brand may be unfamiliar to most, but the companies behind it are not. Formed by GAC Group (GAC) and Nio in 2018 as GAC-Nio New Energy Technology, the joint venture was originally supposed to introduce Hycan as a brand in the partnership, but a significant increase in Pearl River Investment’s stake in the company and Nio’s downsizing of its stake in 2021 (it fully exited the venture a year later) led to the company being renamed Hycan.

Hycan has now appointed a Malaysian company called Concept Fields as its general agent, not only for Malaysia but also for the international market. According to Concept Fields CEO Hua Tai Wan, the company will be responsible for the import, sales and after-sales of Hycan products locally as well as in various left-hand and right-hand drive markets, including the Middle East and Africa.

Flowers said paultan.org Concept Fields signed a formal partnership agreement with Hycan in China earlier this year, with a further MoU expected to be signed there sometime in October. As for the products, they will launch sometime in February or March next year, with three all-electric models expected to hit our market, namely the Z03 SUV, A06/A06 Plus sedans and V09 MPV.

The initial shipments will consist of CBU units, but are expected to move to local CKD assembly from around April, Hua said. The company said it is currently in talks with various companies to explore assembly options and said it will reveal which companies it will partner with later. He added that Hycan is currently working on the conversion from LHD to RHD for upcoming models.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s in store for us. The Z03 SUV is a C-segment offering measuring 4,602mm long, 1,900mm wide and 1,645mm tall, with a 2,750mm wheelbase. The five-seater EV is powered by a front-mounted electric motor and comes in two different power outputs, the first offering 183PS (135kW) and the second, 217PS (160kW), with torque identical for both at 225Nm.

According to the website, three battery capacities are available for the Z03, in this case 55.5 kWh, 63.98 kWh and 76.8 kWh, giving the SUV a range of up to 430 km, 510 km and 620 km (all based on China’s CLTC test standard). With DC fast charging (the manufacturer does not disclose the charging speed), it takes 36 minutes to charge the 55.5 and 63.98 kWh batteries from SoC 30 to 80%, while the 76.8 kWh battery takes 45 minutes.

In terms of specifications, the Z03 comes standard with 17- or 18-inch wheels in the domestic market, and standard kit includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch central display, a panoramic sunroof, a V2L reverse power supply function, an electric tailgate, a wireless charging pad for mobile phones, and an in-car karaoke entertainment system. In China, prices range from RMB 134,800 to RMB 182,800 (RM 82,000 to RM 111,000).

As for the V09, it’s a luxury seven-seater MPV that’s all-electric. Measuring 5,215mm long, 1,967mm wide and 1,910mm tall, with a 3,170mm wheelbase, the V09 is longer and wider than the latest Toyota Alphard. Its official prices in China range from RMB 318,800 to RMB 438,800 (RM194,000 to RM266,000).

Hycan V09 Multipurpose Vehicle.

Like the Z03, there are three battery capacity options for the V09, namely 92 kWh, 95.16 kWh and 114.19 kWh, giving the MPV a range of between 620 and 762 km (again, CLTC) on a single charge. All versions are powered by the same front-mounted electric motor that produces 275 PS (202 kW) and 335 Nm of torque. Hycan doesn’t specify the maximum kW fast charging the MPV supports on its website, only saying that it can be charged from 0% to 50% in just 7.5 minutes.

Highlights include two independently adjustable boss seats for the middle row (making for a 2+2+3 seating configuration) and power-sliding rear doors on both sides. Digital screens abound, from a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and 14.6-inch central touchscreen to a 12.3-inch front passenger display and a 17.3-inch rear passenger display.

Finally, there is the A06/A06 Plus sedan. Despite the naming convention, the A06 Plus is the cheaper of the two, priced from RMB 139,800 (RM 85,000) compared to the A06, which ranges from RMB 179,800 to RMB 269,800 (RM 109,000 to RM 164,000). In terms of dimensions, the A06 Plus measures 4,945 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,520 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. According to data gathered from the carmaker’s website, the A06 is slightly longer by 20 mm.

Hycan A06 Plus (above) and A06 sedan.

The A06 Plus is powered by a front-mounted electric motor that produces 217 PS (160 kW) and 225 Nm. Powered by a 60.04 kWh battery that the company says can be charged from 30% to 80% SoC in just 35 minutes, the A06 Plus has a range of up to 520 km (CLTC). The car is equipped with a 10.25-inch instrument cluster display and a 14.6-inch central display, but ADAS has been largely omitted to keep the price low.

The more expensive A06 comes in FWD (standard and range-extended) and AWD options, as well as two battery capacities (63 kWh and 71 kWh), which offer CLTC ranges of 550 and 630 km respectively. Output from the standard front-wheel-drive version is 183 PS (135 kW) and 225 Nm, while the range-extended FWD version has 217 PS (160 kW) and 225 Nm of twist.

For the all-wheel drive version, an additional motor on the rear axle brings the total output to 462 PS (340 kW) and 534 Nm. As you would expect, this extra motor helps the car accelerate quickly, from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Regardless of battery capacity, the manufacturer claims that the A06 can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 36 minutes.
