How to use Wi-Fi calling on your iPhone, Android phone, or tablet

Some Android devices, like Samsung phone, hide this setting in the Phone app. Here’s how to find it:

  1. Open Telephone app, tap the three-dot icon in the top right and tap Setting.
  2. You will see an option for Call over Wi-Fi. Click on it and turn it on.
  3. When it’s available, you’ll see Call over Wi-Fi next to your carrier’s name in the expanded notification pane on your phone.

Can’t find the option on your Android phone? You need a SIM card in your device for the option to show up (after you pop one in, you may need to restart your phone). If you already have a SIM, open Setting and type “Call over Wi-FiIn the search bar at the top.

What you need to know about Wi-Fi calling

Wi-Fi calling is usually included in your existing voice call plan and counts as a regular call. If you have a limited number of minutes, calls over Wi-Fi will likely be counted as part of your allowance. They won’t cost you extra, but we recommend you double check as service providers don’t always treat them the same. If your carrier charges for calling over Wi-Fi, then time to find a better service provider.

One thing to keep in mind is that any long distance or international charges you pay for voice calls may also apply to Wi-Fi calls. And Wi-Fi calling is not supported in all countries. Instead, try using call (voice or video) functionality in internet-based messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Google Duo, Telegram, Signal, WeChat, and FaceTime. You will not be charged a fee.

Service providers specify exactly when your phone should switch to Wi-Fi calling, but this is inconsistent. If you find that your signal is just strong enough for Wi-Fi calling but not good enough to make clear calls, you can force it by turning on Airplane Mode and then on. Wi-Fi again. Just remember to turn Airplane Mode off again after the call.
