Running a successful portrait session can be a daunting task, especially for photographers new to the studio. The multitude of options can easily become overwhelming. There are countless options for lighting adjustments, backdrops, props, clothing, poses and all the rest, but I’ve found that having a consistent plan and process is key to success.
In this video, I detail my portraiture process from start to finish, including images I created with both continuous and flash, using everything from Westcott Peter Hurley Flex Kitto alien bees, as well as a Lindsay Adler’s Westcott Optical Spot. While I throw the sink at my clients when it comes to equipment, the focus of this video is not on the device, but on the process, specifically creating a consistent process that eliminates many doubts. Doubts and confusion can often be encountered in studio portrait situations. I also show how I use “base” and build-on lighting to create a variety of looks in a single session without swapping multiple devices.
While every photographer works differently, I like to start my portrait sessions with some head and shoulder shots for a variety of reasons. In addition to being a great way to warm up your clients without having to think about posing for their bodies, it also allows me to get to know their unique faces and expressions so I have an idea. Have a good idea of what angles and expressions work best for them. Also, showing my clients a great shot is a great and quick way, to inspire them and break the ice, which makes the rest of the shot more seamless. . I hope you enjoy this video.
