How to make the best French Toast

Saturday morning breakfast is becoming a ritual in our home. It’s nice to have a leisurely morning to do things like smoothie waffles or rainbow toast.

So I thought I’d share how to make the best French toast, as it’s one of my favorites and I feel like there are a few tips and tricks that help elevate it.

Ingredients for the best French Toast:

  • Stale Bread – French Toast is a great way to use up freshly discarded bread
  • Yolk
  • Milk
  • Vanilla essential oil
  • Cinnamon – For a seasonal or holiday feel, add a dash of nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice
  • Butter – for frying

What’s the tip for French toasting?

I like to use all egg yolks (as opposed to whites + yolks) for French toast dough.

This makes things a bit more decadent, and it will help you avoid any thick, scrambled eggs on your French toast. You can use egg whites for another purpose, like omelettes or baked egg whites.

What is the best French toast?

My favorite is sourdough, but really you can use any bread you may already have on hand, even gluten free bread.

How thin or thick you cut your bread will change your French toast, and that’s completely personal preference. I prefer a medium to thick cut if I’m cutting the bread myself.

How do you make French toast not soggy?

Using stale bread or toasting it before dipping in French toast dough is the best way to keep your French toast from getting soggy.

How to make French Toast in 5 Steps:

  1. Prepare your bread. Cut into thick slices if the bread is not already sliced. Then, make sure the bread is slightly stale (you can leave the bag open overnight before using). Otherwise, lightly toast the bread.
  2. Above a plate with a lip, beat egg yolks, milk, and vanilla extract (see recipe card below for measurements). Coat the top of this mixture with cinnamon.
  3. Dip each side of the bread into the mixture.
  4. Sauté the bread in a little butter over medium heat until golden brown and toast on both sides.
  5. Lightly coat with powdered sugar and serve with warm maple syrup for the full French toast experience.

Why add milk to eggs for French toast?

The goal is to create a thin layer of custard on each side of the toast. Milk thins the eggs a little, plus it adds creaminess.

Should I Use Oil or Butter for French Toast?

Cook your French toast in butter. It will still bake well, so no oil is needed. Butter will also add flavor.

How to keep French toast warm?

When I cook French toast for more than a few people, it’s hard to keep the cooked portions warm while I continue to cook the rest.

If you like to serve one person at a time, so not everyone eats at the same time, this shouldn’t be a problem. But sometimes it’s nice to wait until everyone can dine together.

So, to keep the French toast warm while I continue to cook the other pieces, I’ll place the finished slices of French toast on a baking tray lined with foil. Keep this in the oven on “warm” or the lowest setting your oven has.

Sometimes I change things and make French cream bread. Also, here is a recipe for French toast stuffed with pumpkin and almonds!

You can also try French Toast Stickstend to impress people who are less fond of snacks.

Another variation that I love is French toast. This is something we created growing up, where you add crushed breakfast cereals, like Oatmeal honey, to the outside. Try it, it’s so good!
