How to improve your photos using negative fill
When it comes to lighting, we mainly discuss how to correctly add it to scenes to build the final look from a blank medium. But just as important as knowing how to properly add light to a scene is knowing how to remove it. This quick and helpful video tutorial will give you an overview of tonal fill, including what it is and how to use it in your photos.
Coming to you from Steven Schultz, this great video tutorial will introduce you to the concept of negative coloring and why it is such a useful tool to improve your lighting. Simply put, negative fill refers to the process of removing light from a scene instead of adding it. This is done by introducing some kind of material that absorbs light instead of reflecting it, such as the black side of a v-flat or any dark, translucent piece of material. This can allow you to create deeper shadows, create more contrast, highlight structure, control reflections and create more drama in the image, and once you realize the versatility of it, you will find that it is just as important as positive coloring. Check out the video above for a full rundown from Schultz.
