Adobe has released another update to Photoshop that brings improved features, usability, and workflow for photographers and artists. However, an update for a while has been bugging me constantly, the save as feature, but there is an easy solution to fix it.
Adobe Photoshop is constantly getting better and it makes the workflow intuitive if you’ve been using it for a while. Personally, I like the subscription it’s had for several years now, as I can now own constantly updated software. Yes, I know that can be a point of contention, but it makes it more affordable for everyone and in the teaching profession, which means that students can own and be taught the version of most updated instead of just learning on this one. going home and using a hacked copy of CS5 couldn’t do half of the things they learned.
With every update comes new features and improvements, but there is always a so-called improvement that confuses me. And that’s the save as feature. Why did they change that? It works great. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. However, as Adobe has always done, they include an alternative.
Overcome
Navigate to your preferences. On a Mac, they’re under files, on a PC, editing. In the drop-down menu that appears, select file processing.
In the pop-up dialog that appears, choose to enable Save As Legacy. Another thing to consider when here is the “don’t append copy to filename” check when saving a copy. This is a personal preference, as it saves renaming a file when sending it to the client. I just feel like the word “copy” doesn’t sound right.
From this dialog, click ok, then close and restart Photoshop to enable your new/old save-as. I actually had to restart my computer this time for it to work, but usually a simple restart of Photoshop will do the trick.
Welcome back to your familiar Save Feature
That’s it, quick and simple. No more pop-ups asking you to save to the cloud. Return to a quick and familiar save process. The option to save to the cloud is still there, but at least for now it’s up to you to make the decision to do this instead of the software that offers it as the first option.
