Bird photography is not an easy genre to find success in; It takes a fair amount of both specialized equipment and knowledge (mostly knowledge outside of photography) along with a lot of time, patience, and effort to find success. By far, I think the most important thing is to educate yourself simultaneously about bird behavior and habitat while getting to know the photographic side of things. Really, this applies to almost any genre, but it’s especially important in a genre where you’re photographing living creatures that you can’t control, because of your ability to understand, read, and predict behavior. Theirs can be the difference between being ready for it to show a pause when it occurs for a fleeting moment, or have you kicking yourself because something happened so quickly that you didn’t have time to react, and capture it.
