Honoring Unconditional Love (2023)

Every year, National Pets Day celebrates not only our beloved dogs, but all pets, whether furry, finned or feathered!

National Pet Day

When is National Pet Day?

National Pet Day is scheduled every year on April 11.

This pet holiday was founded in 2007 by the renowned pet and family lifestyle expert Colleen Paige– maker Independence DayNational Cat Day and other annual animal celebrations – as a way to promote pet adoption choices.

How pets help us

According to CDCThe love we have for our pets benefits not only our pets, but also people:

“Studies have shown that the relationship between humans and their pets is associated with a number of health benefits, including:

  • Reduces blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD.
  • Increase opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities; better cognitive function in older people; and more opportunities to socialize.”

How many pets are there?

OK, we’ve proven that pets benefit us (a fact we all know!) but how many pets are there in the US?

According to the United States Census Bureau, nearly half of all housing units (owned and rented) in the United States have at least one pet.

Dogs are the most popular type of pet, with 49 million households in the US sharing their space with at least one dog.

Just over 28 million households have a cat (but typically cat households have more cats than dogs, so more cats are kept than dogs).

How can you and the dog celebrate?

Looking to celebrate National Pets Day with your dog? Here are a few ideas:

Dog walking: Not only will it be great exercise for your dog, but you’ll both enjoy some fresh air and quality time together.

Give your dog a special treat: Treat your dog to a favorite snack or a new special treat. You can also make your own dog treats if you like baking.

Buy your dog a new toy: Dogs love to play, so buy them a new toy to keep them entertained. You can also play fetch or tug-of-war with them with their favorite toy.

Schedule a photo shoot: Whether you hire a professional or take a few minutes to take a picture of your dog with your phone, you’ll make memories with your best friend.

Give the greatest gift of all: While buying the newest cat toys on the market and delicious treats are great ways to show your dog how much you care, love is the greatest gift. On National Pets Day and everyday, take a special time out of your busy schedule to sit with, hug and talk to your fur baby.

While this pet holiday is a time to celebrate the joy your dog brings to your life, the holidays are also a time to bring joy to other companion animals in need of a permanent home to call their own. their own. Visit your local shelter and sign up to volunteer, or donate daily necessities, blankets, pet beds or toys.

If you think your cat would like to welcome another furry member into your family, meet lovely adopters at rescue and shelter groups in your area, or search online at Via APet.com, PetFinder.com or PetHarbor.com!
