When we started renovating in Laundry room 2nd floorWe knew we wanted a special floor that separates this room from the rest of the floor.

The first thing you should know, is you don’t need to buy a specific herringbone tile to get this look! Basically, the herringbone pattern can be paved with any type of rectangular tile.
In fact, I’ve seen people buy square (usually less expensive) tiles and then cut them in half with a tile cutter. This effectively (and is more affordable) produces perfectly rectangular pieces that can be laid out to form a great herringbone pattern.
Herringbone floors instantly create a bit of movement and drama in a room, drawing the eye around a space. This is true whether you’re doing flooring or tiling with wood herringbone tiles, and the final look feels a bit more fun, special, and upscale than other tile pattern options!
The herringbone pattern also creates a backlash in the kitchen or bathroom.
History of fish bones
While many people believe that textures originated in textiles, (think of the textures on fabrics in traditional menswear) that’s not really the case.
The herringbone pattern was first recorded in history in the Roman Empire, where it was used to build roads. It was developed as an interlocking pattern set on stone, making it extremely durable.
Herringbones (and chevrons) became common in 1600s homes in France, where they were an elegant status symbol. One of the first documented cases of herringbone parquet dates back to 1539 in France.
This model is called “Fishbone” thanks to its resemblance to the skeletal structure of a herring.

The appearances are similar, with one significant difference. The sundeck ends (whether tile or hardwood) are cut at a 45-degree angle. Instead, the herringbone pieces are cut at a 90-degree angle. While chevron creates a zigzag pattern with a point at the top of each zigzag, herringbone has a staggered pattern that generates the point.

For our new laundry room floor, I knew I wanted a tile that was a bit reminiscent of tile floor in our mud bath. That tile selection has held up beautifully for us over the years, and I was hoping for something that was both durable, but in a lighter, softer color.
