Sports car and motorcycle photography is a unique and exciting genre of photography, here are 5 good reasons you should give it a try.
Maybe it’s the speed, or maybe it’s the sound. Or even the feeling you get when a glorious V12 screams as you trigger a rush of blood-pumping adrenaline. There are countless reasons to love cars, and as you can tell, I’m a huge fan, which is why events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed are the highlight of my year. . The Festival of Speed combines all things cars and bikes, from classic cars to state-of-the-art Formula 1 machinery, all driven by new talents or old greats. This festival got me into photography from the very beginning, so it has a special place in my heart. My last four visits there have served as markers to witness how my photography has evolved. Looking back over the years these pictures were taken at Goodwood reminds me why I photograph cars and why you should try it too.
1. Appreciate
For the heads of petroleum, that is unquestionable. Car photography allows us to appreciate the beautiful machines we hold so dear. It allows us to delve into the details of individual wheel components or body pieces perfectly crafted to cut through the air. Car photos allow us to relive moments where we witnessed our favorite car races in the past or capture the moment of action in a wheel race. It captures that fleeting emotional moment, allowing us to live it over and over again. And who wouldn’t want that?
2. A great day out
There’s more to auto shows than car enthusiasts and rubber-burners. Even if you have only the slightest interest in cars, a day at a car show is great for solo or family photographers. Local events may have activities for children or may be for adults wishing they were a child. Burger trucks and live music are popular activities on the grounds of a UK car show. So even if cars aren’t your main attraction, going out on a summer day with drinks on one side and a camera on the other, doesn’t get any better.
One thing I really value about photography is the community of creators it allows you to meet. Through my creation, I have had the opportunity to meet many talented people, many of whom I now consider close friends and I believe there are similarities in the car community as well. In just four days at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, I spoke to several other photographers while waiting for the next batch of cars. Through chatting, you realize you may have more in common than you previously thought. I find these conversations can lead to great friendships and help you build a network of fellow advertisers with whom you can collaborate in the future. Community is an aspect of photography that we can often overlook; This art form can sometimes feel like an adventure alone, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve found that being creative with others can lead to much more exciting results and loads of fun. Combining the car and photography communities is a perfect way to start.
4. Adrenaline Rush
You can only shoot a few things that give you the same adrenaline rush as a car. Shooting cars is certainly thrilling, but there is nothing like it for those who love that feeling of excitement and suspense. It’s incredibly fast-paced and is sure to get your heart racing. From circling from point to point on the track to the vertical sound a classic race car makes as it drives past you, there are few moments to catch your breath. It will keep you going every moment of your day and hopefully keep you coming back for more.
5. Challenges
In the end, taking pictures of cars is a tough challenge. You may need to try and overcome many obstacles throughout your shots, such as catching fences, crowds, and whatever mother nature throws your way. As I mentioned before, it will require a high level of skill to achieve great results because automotive photography is fast paced. You may not have much time to prepare every shot perfectly and as such, you will need to be very familiar with the camera and its operations to adjust your settings to suit your needs. changing lighting conditions and different shooting styles. Panning is a common technique and takes time and practice to master.
Like many things in photography, it’s unlikely you’ll get it right the first time but through practice and repetition you can add a new skill to your repertoire, which is always beneficial. Although challenging, car photography is a vast field of photography with many possibilities. There are just a few rules to follow and I even encourage you to break them and try something different. It will help you stand out in situations where there is a feeling that there are multiple photographers taking the same photo as you.
