Hard Spun Mares Millie Girl, Spun Glass Win at Woodbine

A pair of stakes for older females at Woodbine both went to mares by Hard Spun  , as Millie Girl  won the CA$150,000 Ontario Matron Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles and, one race later, Spun Glass  took the CA$150,000 Ontario Fashion Stakes (G3) at six furlongs. Both races were run on the synthetic Tapeta surface.

In the Matron, Millie Girl weaved through horses from the back of the pack and finished strong to get up by a neck in 1:41.96. Rafael Hernandez rode the winner for trainer Catherine Day Phillips and owners Kingfield Racing Stable, Braconcrest Inc., and Apricot Valley Thoroughbreds.

Angelou  was second, a half-length ahead of Il Malocchio  in third. The winner paid $10.70.

In the Fashion, the 27-1 longshot Spun Glass also came from the back, albeit in a more compact field, passing seven rivals and splitting horses at the 1/16-pole to win by a half-length. Luis Contreras was aboard for trainer Michael Trombetta and owner-breeder Larry Johnson.
