Group two winner Caturra retired to Overbury Stud


Caturra a son of need mehmas and winner of the Wainwright Flying Childers Stakes (G2) at Doncaster last year, have retired and will take up steed duty at Overbury Stud in 2023.

This 3-year-old puppy was bred by Tally-Ho Stud and sold to Blandford Bloodstock for £110,000 ($130,000) during Phase 2 of the Tattersalls October Annual Sale in 2020, before sent to train with Clive Cox.

Owned by Saeed bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Caturra broke his second start in Bath last May. He then finished in a fair seventh place in the Coventry Stakes (G2) before taking his first black win on the It Pays To Buy Irish Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury.

Second place in the York-listed Julia Graves Roses Stakes was followed by his signature success, a flop before armor in Doncaster’s group 2 for minors at the St Leger meeting. He was then beaten for only a half and a half by perfect power when placed fifth in the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (G1).

Despite not claiming a 3rd place win, Caturra ran reliably several times, including winning 3/4 of a second when reappearing in the Prix Sigy (G3) at Chantilly. He also finished third in Sandown’s listed Scurry Stakes and again in King George Qatar Stakes (G2) at Goodwood.

He will stand in Overbury with an opening fee of £6,500.

“We are keeping things simple—these are the same terms Ardad started with, and if there is a second Ardad, it is this horse,” said Simon Sweeting, hatchery manager.

“He’s the winner of the Fast and Special Early Flying Childers by a top commercial stallion, just like Ardad. And, if so, the Caturra looks even better, with the loveliest head and squishy bits. a bag of strength and quality. We are really looking forward to introducing it to breeders during the December Sale.”

Blandford’s Richard Brown added: “Caturra is Mehmas’ fastest son, and he’s won the same big race as Ardad. It’s two of the biggest names on the commercial market, and Caturra – one the horse is exceptionally good-looking – there’s every chance to join them. He’s like Ardad.”

Cattura, half-brother to Italian winner Berta and half-sibling to winner in the listed position, and Al Biddah Mile Sir Arthur Dayne, is the fifth pony of the list. The sleeping Indian mare won Shoshoni Wind, a half-sister of the 3rd place Burnwynd Boy.
