Your pets may not be able to participate in traditional St. Patrick’s Day events, such as a trip to the pub to pick up a pint of Guinness, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get in the spirit. day! To help you set a new trend this holiday, we’ve rounded up some ‘green’ activities you and your pet can enjoy together.
Deliver a “golden pot” to your local shelter
‘Golden pots’ don’t always have to be filled with gold – they can be filled with anything of value! For shelter, this includes essentials such as gently used blankets or towels, food and water dishes, leashes and collars, brushes and grooming tools, or bedding. It can even include opened food packages, as long as they’re within their shelf life. Before the holiday season you can donate from friends, family or colleagues, then on the 17th you can put it in a ‘pot’ and deliver it to your local shelter.
Fashion some suitable accessories
Feeling crafty? Why not try to get creative with some matching hat accessories for you and your pet to wear. If you have an old white or green shirt, you can cut it into something wearable, such as a bandana for your pet and a scarf for yourself. To take this to the next level, glue three wine corks together in a triangle shape and use it as a DIY shamrock stamp to decorate your new accessories. All you need to do is dip one end in paint, apply it to your accessory, paint over the stem and voila – you’ve got a hand painted shamrock!
Make your own green food
One of the best parts of St. Patrick’s Day is eating all sorts of fun green foods, like shamrock shakes! Unfortunately, most of these festive snacks aren’t pet-friendly, so you can’t share them with your pet – but there are plenty of other St Patrick’s Day treats that they can. enjoy. There are countless recipes online that you can follow to make your own pet-friendly greens at home. We love recipes made with fresh, whole ingredients, such as a simple vegetarian dish. Try using pet-safe greens like bell peppers and beans to match the ‘green’ theme of the day! Explore your local green space
Another great way to celebrate a day with your pet is to explore new parts of your local green space. It could be a trip to a new dog park, a pet-friendly beach, hiking trails, or a beautiful large park where they can run around on a long distance. Maybe you’re even lucky enough to live near one of these top places dog-friendly national park! Rain or shine, your pet will be roaming around with all the new sights and flavors – and showing off your matching accessories!
Bend your green thumb
If your pet can’t explore the green space outside your home, why not bring it with them. There are countless pet-safe plants that can work well both in your garden or in your home, such as catnip and catnip. Growing house plants that are safe for them to eat gives cats the opportunity to engage in this natural behavior – and provides a fun new activity for cats to love. Both catnip and catnip can be easily grown from seed, but if you want to speed up the process, you can usually buy pre-planted pots at your local pet store.
