Great Wall Motor unveils Hi4-T plug-in hybrid system for Tank 500 and Tank 400 at Auto Shanghai 2023

At this year’s Auto Shanghai, Great Wall Motor (GWM) showcased two models under its Tank sub-brand, both featuring the company’s Hi4-T architecture in order to further promote the vehicles new energy convenience (NEV). Of the two, the Tank 500 was opened for pre-order at the event, with prices starting from 360,000 yuan (RM232,330), while the Tank 400 made its world debut.

The Hi4-T is a terrain-focused version of the Hi4 plug-in hybrid system used in the new Haval models also revealed at the show. Following a “dual engine” approach, the Hi4-T allows the vehicle to propel itself by the internal combustion engine, with the electric motor acting as an additional form of propulsion that can be engaged/disengaged depending on the situation.

According to the company, this is to protect the electric motor when faced with prolonged challenging situations that could cause it to overheat. A dedicated system-on-chip (SoC) manages how the line is powered with quick response times in milliseconds.

In the Tank 500, the powertrain is made up of a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine combined with a 9-speed hydraulic automatic transmission (9HAT) and all-wheel drive. The electric motor is integrated into the transmission and forms what the company calls a P2 layout, with the battery powering it located at the rear of the chassis.

The automaker claims the battery provides up to 110 kilometers of range on a single charge, and the entire system is capable of delivering up to 408 PS (402 hp or 300 kW) and 750 lb-ft of torque. Nm). Tank 500 with Hi4-T system can also power accessories with a capacity of 3.3 kW, which is useful for users who plan to go camping with it.

In terms of design, the Tank 500 plug-in hybrid is not much different from the original launched two years ago, except for the addition of a charging port. The interior is equally familiar, with a large 16.2-inch touchscreen center infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an available windshield display. The Tank 500 is also provided with level 2 semi-autonomous driving features.

As for the Tank 400, it is a new addition to the model line, sitting between the Tank 300 and the Tank 500. Boasting a sturdy design and plenty of sharp lines, the Tank 400 has the same 2,850 mm wheelbase as the Tank 400. Tank 500 , but overall shorter at 4,985 mm (versus 5,070 mm). Other dimensions include a width of 1,960 mm and a height of 1,905 mm.

GWM did not provide details on the Tank 400, but it will have a Hi4-T powertrain and can be equipped with a differential lock and come with no less than 11 drive modes. The interior closely resembles the Tank 500 by also featuring the same large screens, but with circular ventilation holes in the corners of the dashboard, redesigned center console and gear lever and no Analog clock between the center vents.
