“That kind of loss brought the situation back to reality,” Gennady Golovkin said in one New York Post interview, “return to the actual state of things.” The 40-year-old refers to arch-rival Canelo Alvarez’s loss to Dmitry Bivol last May. “I’ve known Canelo for a long time,” he said, “and I always knew that (a loss to Canelo) was possible, and Dmitri Bivol showed us that.” Although the hugely talented Canelo was recently deemed invincible, Golovkin says he “never shared that opinion”.

It is understandable that many, if not most, feel that Golovkin has won at least one of his two games against Canelo. Yes, Canelo may have walked out of those games with a draw and a win, but a large chunk of the public feels the redhead star is getting court favor. However, according to Golovkin, he never let those judgments influence him. “I will be honest with you,” said Golovkin, “I moved out the next day. I didn’t think about it much. I realized that the people who gave those scores, they were used. They are used in the same way as disposable tissues are being used. It’s time to use them, they’ve been used and discarded.”

Perhaps surprisingly, Golovkin claims he’s unafraid of being judged favorably when he faces Canelo for the third time this September 8 in Las Vegas. Nor does he seem to be afraid that he is gaining weight to face Canelo in the super-middleweight division, where Canelo reigns supreme. Indeed, warrior Kazackh feels like Canelo will be the one to be weighed down with concerns in their third bout. Golockin said: “I think he will come to a conclusion about the outcome of his loss. “He’s going to take our fight much more seriously, much more realistically, and it’s going to be a completely different fight, compared to his fight against Bivol.”

It’s clear to fans and analysts that neither Golovkin nor Canelo are big fans of each other. Indeed, parcel writes that, since the defeat against Bivol and its subsequent defeat, “Alvarez’s public attitude has changed dramatically and has become more belligerent”. While it is also argued that this time Golovkin subtly deceived Canelo around Golovkin’s claim that Canelo’s manner dictates “how he was raised and how toxic he is around him, the toxic man is in his camp.”
