Golovkin made it personal, he’ll pay, says Canelo

He may have light and heavyweight business to deal with first, but Canelo Alvarez says the third fight against Gennadiy Golovkin is “personal”.

The undisputed super-middleweight king announced his return to Matchroom and DAZN last week and the triple deal starts with a match at 175lbs. Alvarez will be bidding to be the two-time light-heavyweight champion when he challenges Dmitry Bivol for the WBA belt on May 7 at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.

“I picked Bivol because he’s a great fighter,” the Mexican said at the Matchroom USA card last night in San Diego.

“He’s the best at 175. I just want to make history. He’s a really good fighter. He knows what to do in the ring. I know what kind of fighter he is, but I really don’t care. I’m at my peak and I have a lot of skills. ”

Another win and another title for the 31-year-old would then lead him to a fight in September with his biggest rival Gennadiy Golovkin. While becoming undisputed with a 175lb gain, he Canelo had a last chance to close on ‘GGG’ as he dropped to 168lbs to defend his four titles.

“I don’t know why now [is the time to face Golovkin again]. For me, it’s the best deal. I focused on Bivol,” said Canelo, who later added, “Yes, it’s personal. He said a lot of nonsense about me, so he’s going to pay the price. ”

Golovkin had his own hurdle to overcome before rising to 168lbs. The 39-year-old Kazakh player will once again bid to unify the middleweight division on April 9 in Japan against Ryota Murata. If Golovkin prevails then he will add the WBA belt to the IBF belt he already owns.
