George Russell wins first F1 at Brazilian Grand Prix



SAO PAULO — Chased to the end by teammates Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes driver George Russell won his first race in Formula 1 on Sunday in Brazil grand opening.

It was also Mercedes’ first GP win in another disappointing season with Hamilton fixing the score 1-2 for the team in his statement of intent for next season.

Russell, 24, has dominated the race in Sao Paulo from the start, which has put him in pole position on the grid. He was on the podium seven times before Sunday’s win.

Hamilton, who started second, dropped to eighth after his car made contact with Max Verstappen’s Red Bull on the seventh round. The Dutchman was awarded a penalty in 5 seconds and finished in sixth place.

Verstappen and his Red Bull team were crowned F1 champion.

The Brazilian GP is the penultimate race of the season against Abu Dhabi on November 20.
