Fans who attended Teofimo Lopez’s long-awaited match against George Kambosos Jr. on November 27, 2021, expect to have a good time. They returned to their comfortable seats at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater, enjoyed a few adult drinks, and cheered loudly as Lopez took to the ring. But, despite their expectations, Kambosos Jr forced them to leave the arena with their heads bowed.
On that night, the Australian-Australian tennis player pushed through the previously unified lightweight match list before winning the decisive victory closer than expected. Although Kambosos Jr’s performance was the best of his relatively young career, he believes he hasn’t come close to revealing his true potential to the world of boxing.
“Lopez’s win is only 15%,” Kambosos Jr said on his social media account. “I’m getting better and better every day.”
Throughout much of the build-up between Lopez and Kambosos Jr., the pair were forced to endure a long and arduous wait. From streaming company Triller winning the rights to their contest but putting it on ice on countless occasions, to Lopez’s dealings with a positive COVID-19 test result, the acrimony between them just getting bigger.
With the tension running high, Lopez secured a knock-out win in the opening round. And, as their contest officially kicked off on that unforgettable Saturday night, Lopez tried to prove that his words were prophetic.
Kambosos Jr weathered the storm early, only to capitalize on the mistakes of his much younger man. With their rivalry now behind them, Kambosos Jr is now weighing his next move. The 28-year-old has made his feelings clear, saying he has reduced his list of opponents to Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia, Vasiliy Lomachenko and WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney.
However, Kambosos Jr will ultimately choose to face next, after battling on US soil in two of his past three competitions, the 28-year-old vowed to defend his newly won title in his home country of Australia. Upcoming.
