George Kambosos activates Devin Haney rematch clause
Despite being brutally defeated, George Kambosos activated his rematch clause to fight Devin Haney once again.
On June 5 at Marvel Stadium, Americans entered the lion’s den in front of 41,000 fans and become the undisputed lightweight world champion. Haney appeared to have never been beaten throughout 12 rounds and took the Aussie score after a dominating performance.
Kambosos has always been given the chance to advance because the paperwork was already mapped out and the former champion confirmed to NewsCorp that he intends to do so.
“Yes, the rematch is happening, 100%. I have activated the rematch clause”.
“The Emperor is dead, but Ferocious is still alive and I will return.”
“We have not finalized the location yet. There are options for Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. It will be in Australia, which is great. I know I can win a rematch. I’m going to make some changes, and it’s my destiny to show how great I am and get those belts back.”
Kambosos who excels in self-confidencewent on to believe he could beat Haney and said his performance for the first time was just ‘one tap’.
“He did what he had to do with his stab, he was a smart operator, but I have to be smarter in my game plan next time. I was lucky to get the shot again and not many Australians can say they’ve had three consecutive world titles. ”
“I shocked Lopez when I won the belt, I lost to Haney but now I plan to fight to get the belt back. I have the eyes of a tiger.”
In an interview last week Haney not 100% committed to rematch on camera while speaking with ESPN’s Mark Kriegel. The Las Vegas man hints at moving up to 140lbs to try to be the undisputed two-weight champion:
“I will most likely go up to 140.”
“It’s like I said we’ll sit down with the team and figure out what’s next for me. I’ve been at 135 for quite some time since being an amateur, over six or seven years, so it’s not the easiest weighting for me and I’ve had my best at 135 of everything. ”
“I am the top dog, no one else has a belt. I have everything at 135 but I still want to make the biggest skirmishes possible. So if it makes sense for me to stay at 135 I’ll stay. If not, we get to 140, we’ll see. ”
