GE Healthcare’s DL model for cardiac MRI gains FDA approval

GE Healthcare announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has removed Sonic DL, an application that leverages neural networks to accelerate image acquisition in magnetic resonance imaging, for healthcare purposes.

WHY IT IMPORTANT

Requiring the patient to lie still and hold their breath during imaging is a significant drawback to cardiac MRI.

A new GE deep learning technology called Sonic DL can enable high-quality cardiac imaging “in just one heartbeat,” according to GE Healthcare’s announcement last week that the tool has received a license from GE Healthcare. FDA authorization 510(k).

Gianluca Pontone, director of perioperative cardiology and cardiovascular imaging at the Centro Cardiologico Monzino in Milan, said that for patients with shortness of breath, arrhythmias or advanced heart failure, it’s “replaced hearts” change the game”.

He added that the approach “ensures a smoother and more comfortable experience for the patient during the MRI examination.”

GE Healthcare says the Sonic DL is capable of reducing scan times by 83% compared to the current gold standard, which can reduce or eliminate the need for repetitive patient holdings and expand the pool of eligible patients. cardiac MRI event.

A video the company released to coincide with the announcement shows comparable images of full-heart coverage in 59 seconds compared to a conventional MRI’s one minute and 42 seconds.

For patients with breathing difficulties, comparable images to cover the entire heart with free breathing appear in 51 seconds, compared with two minutes and 10 seconds with conventional MRI and breath holding.

GE Healthcare claims DL-based imaging improves clarity despite cardiac arrhythmias, rendering the equivalent image completed in 46 frames in 24 seconds with Sonic DL, compared with 20 frames in one min 45 sec with conventional MRI.

The company says its goal is to extend the Sonic DL and AIR Recon DL technology across all anatomies.

TREND TO BIGGER WOMAN

The technology leverages GE Healthcare’s AIR Recon DL, a deep learning-based image reconstruction algorithm. Jie Xue, president and chief executive officer of Global MR for GE Healthcare, says AI has benefited more than 10 million patients.

“Chicago-based Duly Health and Care, using this technology, has reduced wait times allowing them to see more patients,” said Vignesh Shetty, SVP and GM of Edison AI and Platform for GE Healthcare. sooner rather than later”.

In December, Healthcare IT News spoke with Shetty about the speed of AI and its ability to tackle the healthcare industry’s data challenges and improve health outcomes.

He said doctors and patients are benefiting from artificial intelligence embedded in medical devices.

“The goal is to have AI tools ready when and where they are needed to contribute to faster diagnosis and, ideally, better patient outcomes.”

Neural networks are based on a large number of parameters. The general development for AI in Healthcare has focused a lot of energy on advancing diagnostic technologies to detect heart disease.

In 2021, GE Healthcare partners with the American College of Cardiology to collaborate on AI and digital technology in cardiovascular care. The collaboration prioritizes AI-driven services, such as image interpretation, risk prediction, and decision support.

“We aim to help shape the path of cardiac care – from early detection to treatment to home monitoring – by combining our expertise in AI and digital technology with leadership,” said Eigil. leading clinical leadership to enhance risk prediction and decision support”. Samset, GE Healthcare’s chief technology scientist for cardiovascular solutions, announced the partnership.

ON PROFILE

“Sonic DL is a paradigm shift for MR that enables the creation of high-quality images in just one heartbeat,” Xue said in the statement. “It greatly expands patient access and improves diagnostic value for patients who need it most but were previously unable to successfully scan.”
