G1SW Drill’s half-sister graduated from Golden Gate

For the rest of race week, sleep after the Derby also drifted into Maiden Watch, with only four sophomores making it to the final lap.

Swall, the 3-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper was acquired last year by the successful California racing association Little Red Feather for $240,000 after a :10 1/5 eight mile breeze at the March Sale for 2-year-olds training at the Ocala Breeder’s Sales Company. The boy didn’t return to serious training until this past February at Golden Gate Fields in local coach Andy Mathis’s shed.
Debuting for the first time on April 22 at the Golden Gate, Swall missed the holiday and never made it. She overcame three horses in the lane to finish the ninth race in a flat 5 1/2 race. Three weeks later, armed with flashing lights, a revived Swall staggered out of the gate but recovered quickly, making his way forward under the jockey Francisco Duran. Hit early fractions of :22.09 and :45.11 while maintaining a narrow advantage over British hybrids Tessa Swall eliminated that formidable opponent in the eighth column and took the lead.
Swall completed six races on the all-weather track with a ratio of 1: 10.68.
Unlike her talented half-brother, Drill, who broke his maidenhood the summer he was 2 for trainer Bob Baffert, Swall has followed in her dam’s footsteps, Storm Cat Cat Dancer mare. The now 21-year-old mare, the dam of eight outstanding winners from the nine ponies that entered the race, didn’t win her first race until June of the 3-year-old campaign. After retiring, she’s made three rounds of sales, with the most recent being the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale in 2011, where she dropped the hammer on Stonestreet for $1.4 million when he was a pony. Drill, son of Attorney Ron and a $300,000 purchase himself, has proven to be a useful sprinter during his career, amassing $557,022 over his career. As a precocious young man, he won the 2011 Del Mar Futurity (G1) award.
