Free update adds 4K/120p recording option to Sony ZV-E1

Now, as promised at the time of the ZV-E1’s release, Sony has announced a free upgrade that lets you shoot 4K/120p and 1080/240p movies. “With this new upgrade, the ZV-E1 joins the list of Sony cameras with 4K/120p video recording capabilities, including Alpha 1 And Alpha 7SIIIand FX6, FX3And FX30 from the Sony Cinema Series,” Sony announced. “This feature enables faster high frame rate video recording, producing smooth slow motion footage 5 times slower than the standard 24 fps, demonstrating Sony’s commitment to providing providing breakthrough technology for all creators.”

The 4K/120p recording option is only available with the ZV-E1’s Long GOP interframe compression mode, while 1080/240p mode is available via S&Q mode. Sony hasn’t said to what extent the new modes generate heat to limit recording time.

To upgrade the ZV-E1, the license must first be downloaded through Sony Creators’ Cloud Platform. Once the license is issued, the user can download and install the update file to their camera.
