Former bell tower racer James “Woody” Woodruff Maloney Jr. passed away on February 5, at the age of 69.

Woody was born on October 20, 1953 in Long Island, NY, to James Woodruff Maloney Sr. and the late Elizabeth Hyland Maloney. As Woody grew up, his family split their time between East Norwich, Long Island, NY and a house on Colleton Avenue in Aiken, SC

His father, James, was a renowned horse trainer who was inducted into the Thoroughbred Aiken Hall of Fame and National Museum of the Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY His mother, Lib, was one of the leading show racers of the 1930s and was awarded the Alfred B. Maclay Trophy, at the National Horse Show, in Madison Square Garden in 1934, which is the nation’s highest age award. youth.

Woody Maloney grew up riding in the Hitchcock Woods in Aiken and would become a famous bell tower racer. He joined the Aiken Obstacle Association and was a prolific tennis player at Aiken Tennis Club.
