For Terell Bostic, now is the time to act

“This is not something I do in my spare time, this is not my job – boxing is my life.”

— Teenager Terell Bostic

Terell “Problem Child” Bostic (8-1, 1 KO) had a real fight on his hands when he entered the ring at Sony Hall on June 29th Matthew “Lefty Gunz” Gonzalez, but he is not threatened. In fact, he didn’t flinch when this fight was proposed.

There’s not much time to be picky; At the age of 32, Bostic sooner or later has to switch to competing in the welterweight division. And if he can get a win over the talented Gonzalez, he will rise up the ranks in the minds of many.

Bostic is from Wyandanch, on the way out to Long Island in Suffolk County. After having over 30 amateur fights, he turned pro in June 2015 and stopped Masaki Aida in the second round. Bostic doesn’t have to be indulgent; In just his fourth professional bout, he went up against Omar Bordoy, a 6-0 boxer who knows a few more tricks. He caught Bostic in the third round and put him in the frame. That basically made the difference as Bostic lost decisively in six innings. That’s how he came close to going undefeated.

There is also another aspect of that; two of his victories came from split decisions, and in another he won a majority decision.

Of course, this is what can happen when you don’t come to the table with much power. After that TKO win on his professional debut, he didn’t beat anyone else by long distance.

The best hope for someone like Bostic is to keep his opponent out of range using the stab. It’s something he’s been trying to do, but it remains to be seen if he can do it as he advances in the class. And make no mistake about that; facing Matthew Gonzalez represents a significant step forward in the class.

Bostic didn’t fight in New York City until his Boxing Insider Promotion card at Sony Hall on Feb. 23. His opponent, Clay Burns, a rather clumsy veteran, left him a bit off the ball. equal to an unorthodox style. And it’s not easy to score goals; he won the deciding round, but beat Burns by only one point on one of the judges’ scorecards, while scoring a seven-point margin on another judge’s card.

During the fight, Bostic used his jab to keep his awkward enemies under relative control. And he seized the opportunity to capitalize on a mistake by sending Burns into the net with a headbutt in the third inning. Bostic even went south in the late game to show his versatility.

As a father of four, it’s clear that Binto has plenty of time to spend with his children, as he also spends his time helping children with special needs. And he’ll have an even bigger platform to do that if he can beat an opponent like Matthew Gonzalez.

There is no better time than now to reach for the stars.
