“I was looking to combine the best with the best,” said Floyd Mayweather Resist the hype, commenting on his role as promoter. “The ultimate goal is to find the next Floyd Mayweather.” However, that can be difficult to do. Mayweather, like him or not, is a once-in-a-lifetime talent, a fact he’s not afraid to acknowledge. Moreover, the man fought with a series of top boxers. It is often argued that he faces big-name opponents up in the hills (like Manny Pacquiao, for example). Whether that is true or not, it will be noted for posterity that Mayweather has never failed in the ring. Plus, he’s never really come close to losing, save it on a few occasions.

“When I say I’m the best, I mean it from the bottom of my heart,” he said in the interview. “I beat more champions than Chavez beat in his illustrious career… I beat more champions than Sugar Ray Robinson beat in his illustrious career.” This is a bold talk, and it certainly can be seen as controversial. However, while the debate over the “best” boxer is/is permanent, Mayweather’s record against fellow champions speaks for itself. With that in mind, Mayweather – who currently only fights in shows – has retired, and he has some thoughts on the fighting game in its current form.

While talking to Resist the hypeMayweather points out that the boxing scene has undergone some serious changes over time. “Everybody has a belt now,” he said. “I never won an internship belt.” Mayweather argues that the sheer number of championship belts is having a negative impact on the sport. “There are so many belts in the sport of boxing that the sport of boxing is in decline now,” he declared. “Everybody is a champion.” Mayweather doesn’t seem too impressed with players who have won empty titles. “I win the belt every time,” he said. “I went and beat the champion for the belt.”

Mayweather has been relatively inactive in the media lately. Of course, he’s always appeared regularly in the media, but now he’s back with boxing headlines. There was an exhibition between him and undefeated heavyweight Don “Dangerous” Moore taking place in May in Dubai. There have also been reports of tension between Mayweather and his guard, Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who will also fight this spring. However, as is his habit, Mayweather plays cool.

“God has truly blessed me and put me in a position to be able to repay my warriors,” he said. And for the critics? “My job has always been to become a greater person and stay positive. ”
