While he was touted as a tough and rugged opponent, Isaac Cruz was expected to be eliminated under pressure from tough Baltimore native, Gervonta Davis. Despite those stereotypes, Cruz was more than standing on his own in front of the packed crowds at the Staples Center last night in Los Angeles, California.

With Cruz’s pressure proven to be relentless and his chin raised very well against Davis’ harmful knockout power, the Mexican product brought the 135-weight all-time favorite. whatever he can handle. As the clock ticked the last few seconds, Cruz gleefully raised his hands to the sky, believing he had done more than enough to pocket the victory.

However, the 23-year-old was disappointed as Davis continued to make a strongly agreed upon decision. Judge Zachary Young gave their section a score of 116-112 in favor of Davis, while both Carla Caiz and Max DeLuca came slightly closer, switching to a normal scorecard of 115-113. While Davis was still able to preserve his undefeated record in the end, in the opinion of Davis promoter Floyd Mayweather, he doesn’t believe their competition comes this close.

In fact, if he goes to the recently retired Hall of Famer, he’ll want to see fresh, young blood added to the judging panel.

“We have these referees in the fight right now,” Mayweather told a group of reporters. “The judges are 75 years old, 80 years old. When it’s time to hang it up, hang it up. I must not be biased. If Tank had his ass, I tell you, he’d have been butt-butted. There are probably four innings that he could have. But eight rounds he was outboxed. ”

Unlike most of the matches involving Davis, the multi-division ranker was unable to finish the show. In particular, in the second half of their competition, he appeared with boxing and moving as opposed to vehemently seeking the blow to end the fight.

As their bout ended, Davis revealed that his reluctance to seek the knockout was due to directly injuring his left hand. However, while Davis saw his 16-fight knockout streak come to an end, Mayweather still prides himself on his youth level and ability to adjust on the fly.

While it may not be the fighting style people are used to seeing from Davis, in the end, Mayweather believes Davis will benefit from it in the long run.

“The name of the game is boxing, not slugging,” Mayweather continued. “When boxing is over and you hang it up like me, you still want your facilities. That is more important than anything. F*ck money. Your health is more important than anything. The name of the game is hit and don’t get hit”.
