Fisker plans to bring replaceable batteries to Ocean EV by 2024

The Fisker Ocean electric SUV will receive a replaceable battery from startup Ample in 2024, Fisker announced Tuesday. But the partnership will initially target fleets.

“With today’s announcement, motorists can now expect a combination of award-winning design and affordability in Fisker Ocean,” a company statement said, “supported.” by the latest battery technology, never have to worry about range or worry about charging.”

California-based Ample hopes to succeed where many have failed by implementing large scale EV battery swap. The concept revolves around Ample’s idea of a single, modular battery design that the startup plans to adapt for different vehicles. Ample previously said its stations can complete a battery swap in 10 minutes.

Ample announced its modular battery architecture and battery swapping stations in 2021, after what the startup says is seven years of development. Ample has so far tested its battery swapping technology on Nissan Leafs in San Francisco, but it’s not yet known how the technology will work with a liquid-cooled vehicle like the Ocean. Fleet customers will find out first.

“The initial target customers for Fisker Ample-powered electric vehicles will be fleet operators looking to transition to electric mobility without impacting the economy or operations,” the statement said. know. Without mentioning whether the battery swapping service would extend to retail customers or pricing to fleet customers, Fisker only said that it would share the revenue from battery swaps with Ample.

ocean production start in Austria in November, but contract manufacturer Magna has yet to pick up the pace. Fisker beat versions of the Model Y in the range, with a rating of 440 miles in Europe on a gentler WLTP test cycle. The Ocean is still unrated for the US

Battery swapping was once considered a success of electric vehicle technology, but its implementation has proven difficult. Tesla tried swapping batteries nearly 10 years ago—started a scheme claiming that its Model S package could be swapped out in about 90 seconds. After setting up and running a station, it dropped the plan.

Chinese carmaker Nio has had some success building a network of swap stations in its home market, with plans to expand into Europe along with starting sales there. Battery supplier. CATL revealed battery swap solution in China at the beginning of last year, and toss it out right after that.
