First-crop stallion McKinzie wins second at Saratoga

As Peter Bradley walked into the training ground on a wet Sunday morning, the security guard at the gate wished him a good afternoon.

“We’ll see about that after the first race,” Bradley replied with his signature smile.

About an hour later, Bradley was having a really fun afternoon, when his two-year-old mare Older brother win at first try ask through a mud puddle Saratoga Race Track.

“Pete found him at a 2-year-old sale and partnered with Gainesway,” Brown said. “We appreciated the opportunity, and he was well-trained and didn’t miss a beat.”

Briland is the third McKinzie son to play for Brown at Saratoga this summer. On July 27, McPatrick Opportunity broke his virginity, and on August 4, Lemons don’t lie third prize

Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, Briland sold for $200,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale to Scoot Stables. Bradley Thoroughbreds signed her up for $675,000 at the OBS April sale of two-year-olds in training. She was consigned by Julie Davies at OBS.

“We probably looked at this mare 10 different times, and it didn’t matter when we looked at her,” said Devon Bradley, stud sales manager for Bradley Thoroughbreds. “I sit in the back and watch horses gallop for days, and sometimes you only see one, and that’s the mare. We don’t usually buy horses that high.”

Bred in Kentucky by Fred W. Hertrich III, John D. Fielding & Robert L. Tribbett, Briland is owned in partnership by Gainesway Stable (Antony Beck), Cambron Equine and Alan Northcutt. Rider Tyler Gaffalione wears Gainesway Silks.

The brown mare has come out. Speightstown mare Bay Harbor, herself a Grade 3 winner Our Khrysty (Newfoundland ) has earned $313,260 in his 18-race racing career.

Bay Harbor is half-sibling to four six-figure earners, including Pyrenees (Into mischief ), who won this year’s Pimlico Special (G3) and Grace Adler (Curlin ), winner of the 2021 Del Mark Debutante (G1).

Currently ranked 10th on the early season horse breed list by earnings, McKinzie (Street feel ) is priced at $30,000 in 2024 at Gainesway in Lexington. He has three winners from 27 runners, with four runners and three thirds.

“I think McKinzie is a real stud,” said Devon Bradley.

Brown agrees with her views.

“He’s a promising young stallion who has some good horses on the dirt, and they all act like they want to go longer,” he said. “This mare isn’t very big, but the way she trains, she’s going to go far. I’m very excited about her future.”
