Katelyn James breaks down the essential (in my opinion) options you need to know and master Canon’s EOS R6 to be able to perfect the AF and eye-tracking options to make sure subjects stay sharp and tracked. Her style is easygoing and she’s great to listen to. I love her videos and explanations, the videos make sense and put things into perspective.
After converting from Canon 5D MarkIV last year to R6. I’d love to dive into the menus on the new camera and explore all the options available to me. Being in the middle of wedding photography season meant that I never really had as much time to look up menus as I did for years with my last Canon camera and finally had to. used pretty much everything out of the box. (albeit with a few changes) options.
It can be seen the focus modes that James uses and there is a reason behind those choices. I did some of the tips she uses but the tip on how to disable eye tracking for the * button is great. I set it to toggle on the front button next to the shutter and ended up having to cycle through modes to get to it. Servo mode is on? It’s also a good thing because the bride and groom never sit still (Eesh the gall of them!). Orientation-based AF mode is also a good option that I haven’t considered or implemented before (but hope to try this weekend).
I really love my R6 and never thought I would give up on the 5D Mark IV. This video has helped me a lot and I can see myself using this camera more and more in the near future with the only real issue being the sensor size for large print landscape photos. I also have an EOS-R, though, and with the 30 Megapixel sensor on it, I’m completely covered. The only question now is should I buy the R5 or wait for the R5 Mark II? Time will tell how good the next version of these Mirrorless cameras will be, and for now, using every option for my existing kit is a good solution.
