FIM helmet testing/helmet homology enters a new phase and goes off-road

FRHPhe-02

The FRHP was launched in 2016 to develop and recommend the best level of helmet protection for riders competing in FIM competitions. The program’s phase 01 standard (FRHPhe-01) is only for Cycling and homologous helmets first introduced in June 2019 (in MotoGP), then in January 2020 for all other circuit racing.

After four seasons of experience, FIM is claimed to have significantly increased driver safety through a process of assessing protection against low, medium and high speed linear impacts, impacts oblique and penetrating, this program was able to learn from 38 similar FIM Helmets, from 22 manufacturers.

Following close cooperation between all key stakeholders and an FIM approved laboratory (Impact Laboratory at Zaragoza University), phase 02 of the FIM Racing Certification Program for Helmets (FRHPhe -02) is now implemented. This new phase also focuses on Off-Road helmets, thus marking a major turning point for safety in Motocross, Enduro, Speedway and Cross-Country disciplines, with the first FIM standard for the Championships. FIM Off-Road Champion.

From the outset, the purpose of the FRHphe-02 was to improve riders’ head protection in all other disciplines. This Phase 02 has been established, in cooperation with helmet manufacturers, to define a new standard that goes beyond existing standards on the market (e.g. UN ECE 22.06, Snell M2020, JIS T8133) and higher than FRHPhe -01.

Compared with the previously mentioned standards, the FRHphe-02 have undergone an enhanced and more complete evaluation of their performance, in addition to having previously been certified as compliant with the international standard (with random impacts from 9 to 13 out of 22 are pre-set locations distributed over the entire helmet surface). This includes new threshold requirements as well as new impacts and tests, such as new impact tests for oblique anvils, impact tests for hemispherical anvils (for measuring force rotation generated during impacts), rapid removal cheek pad test and introduction to Skull Fracture. Criteria (SFC).

FIM intends to further enhance safety for our riders with the new FIM helmet standard (FRHPhe-02), which will be strongly recommended as of 2025 and become mandatory. as of 2026 for FIM Riders (except for Trial, Pedelecs, SSV and Land Speed World Records (Streamliners riders only).) We therefore expect and strongly encourage All riders from the National Federations use FIM’s identical helmets to head in the same direction.

With the aforementioned FIM standards, the FIM expects all manufacturers to market the FIM equivalent helmets to bring a new level of helmet safety around the world.

For example, for the FRHHe-01, the FIM Similarity Label (TBD), sewn directly on the helmet strap, will uniquely identify each helmet presented in the FIM competitions and this will work. as an effective tracking tool for Engineering Managers. By scanning the label QR code, information regarding helmet features and similarity validity will be accessible and tracked individually.

Jorge Viegas, President of FIM

FIM’s top goal has always been the safety of riders. After experiencing phase 1 of the FIM Racing Certification Program for Helmets (FRHPhe-01), FIM and DORNA are completely satisfied with the effective results for the safety of the riders. The FRHPhe-02 represents an important milestone to increase safety for our riders and introduces an FIM standard for off-road racers. FIM has been involved in this project, with a lot of work together with our helmet manufacturers, promoters and with our Technical Manager feedback. I hope that some manufacturers will recommend helmets suitable for FRHHe-02 to our riders ahead of the 2026 season goal and they can produce them not only for FIM championships but also for national federation events, for safety in Off-Road.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna

Helmets are undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of equipment for rider safety, so it is important that FIM commits itself fully to the similarity and development of this important element. Furthermore, it is good to see that all the stakeholders involved in the world championships are working together towards a common goal: to increase safety, not only for the track but also for racers at the highest level. individual.”
