Filtered – Users in Photoshop by Scott Kelby

It’s #TravelTuesday and me, Dave Williams, back here! I write to you from under the sky full of Aurora. Actually, Aurora is taking a break. It’ll be back up in 20 minutes so I’m making the most of the opportunity to sit in the truck’s warmth instead of standing outside in -3f (-19c), plus the wind!

Today I want to touch the filter. Filters can make a big difference when we apply them to the right circumstances. Think of them as a linear gradient, but attached to your camera 😉

Whether they are gradient or solid, the Neutral Density filter will essentially allow less light to enter our lens, blocking it like shadows across the entire frame or part of it. Learning how and when to apply filters can be of great help in long exposure photography.

There are arguments that we can do the same thing in Adobe Photoshop, however, although this is true in many cases, we simply cannot reproduce the water trails in the same way as when we do it optically, in camera, using a filter.

If you don’t use filters, I implore you to make it your goal this week to learn a little more about them and consider their application in your photography.

Written from Finland, with pictures from Iceland, I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Lots of love

Dave
