Fake ChatGPT browser extension takes your Facebook, Google account

OpenAI’s advanced AI language model, called ChatGPT, is becoming increasingly popular thanks to advanced language processing techniques that allow it to generate responses that mimic human language. The system engages in natural-sounding conversations with users and provides comprehensive explanations on a variety of topics. ChatGPT has been trained on large textual datasets allowing language models to analyze and respond to text in a number of contexts as well as languages. However, this growing popularity has made it a growing attraction for cybercriminals with a number of ChatGPT-related scams running rampant.

There were earlier reports that ChatGPT was fake application becoming more popular. Now a new scam is being used by hacker to steal people’s sensitive data, according to a report by online security company Guardio.

How does the scam work?

The scam involved a fake browser extension called “Quick Access to GPT Chat” that victims unknowingly downloaded to gain instant access to chatGPT. Although access is granted to the chatbot, the browser extension will steal all cookies stored on your device, including session and security tokens for YouTubeFacebook, Google and more.

Now hackers are free to steal your password, gain access and take over your account. Facebook accounts are especially targeted by hackers.

Targeted Facebook account

The browser extension quietly installs a mandatory backdoor to your Facebook account. This fake ChatGPT browser extension is famous for hijacking famous Facebook accounts. “By hijacking popular Facebook business accounts, the threat actor creates an elite army of Facebook bots and a malicious paid media engine,” the Guardian report states. This allows it to push paid ads on Facebook at the expense of its victims in a worm-like manner that propagates itself.”

Thankfully, since Guardio’s report was published, the “Quick Access to GPT Chat” browser extension has been removed from the Chrome Web Store. However, if you still have it installed on your device, you should remove it immediately to prevent hackers from accessing your account.
