The Expeditions series is a mixed bag or medium, but each new entry still has plenty of potential. Expeditions: Rome no different: a 50-hour RPG in which you get to lead a Roman legion through “Greece, Egypt, and Gaul.” It now has a release date, January 20, 2022, and a new trailer below.
Expeditions: Rome offers an “alternative historical setting” in which you play as Legatus – a high-ranking military officer – forced to flee Rome. During your travels, you can wield military power or “silver tongues,” and your decisions affect not only your path, but Rome as well.
It seems to be a much more ambitious game than its predecessors when Nate watched Expeditions: Rome this early year. He’s most excited about your quest to lead your Roman Legion.
Obviously, this won’t be a Total War game. You’ll want, Total War for that. But it seems that Logic Artists has really leaned toward the game’s army management side: your centerpiece in every action of the game is a military camp that you’ll actively manage and upgrade, while bringing in make decisions about where to send troops.
Some decisions will have a direct impact on your team, while others will have larger consequences. For example, the strength, deployment, and actions of your troops in an area will change the interactions your character has with NPCs, in ways that are not hard to imagine.
Nate also uses the pun “It’s Gaul folks!” even so, this may disprove his opinion.
I like a little bit of turn-based combat, a bit of history, and a little bit of squad management. If someone can promise that it won’t end with me being stabbed 23 times, I’ll let Rome go. In the meantime, more screenshots and trailers available on Steam if you’re interested.
