Exercise driver Witt dies in Keeneland training accident


Callie Witt, 20, a gymnast for trainer Joe Sharp, died April 29 after a morning training accident on Keeneland training path.

The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. when Witt was thrown from the 2-year-old horse.

Alpha Event Y. Lexington Fire and Emergency Services arrived on the scene within six minutes and took Witt to the University of Kentucky’s Emergency Department, where she was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma.

Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Callie’s family, friends, and our collective racing community at this difficult time.”

Witt, a native of Nebraska, is attending Bluegrass Community and Technical College.
