(EXCLUSIVE) Teen awarded scholarship to Morehouse after viral video
Amir Staten of Philadelphia will not only go to his college of choice, Morehouse College, but he will do so on a full academic scholarship, Shade room studied exclusively.
In an exclusive clip obtained by The Shade Room, the soon-to-be Morehouse Man is speechless when he learns he has just received a 4-year Bonner Scholars Fellowship. Wiping his tears, the teenager said to his mother:
You don’t have to pay for college.
In addition to the full scholarship, Staten received another $20,000 in academic funds.
Your background has a lot to do with his scholarship. Karlyyne Staten, Amir’s mother, said in particular that no words can fully express gratitude and thanks.
His mother says seniors at Friends School in Germantown will major in sociology because there isn’t enough Black representation in the field.
Amir became famous after being accepted into Morehouse
If you recall, Amir Staten went viral in February to celebrate his acceptance letter to HBCU. In the rain, he jumped for joy and shouted, “LET’S GO!”
In an interview with CBS News, Amir expressed:
Going to university is fine. Amir Staten says it’s great to go to college. It’s great to pick up a book, and it’s great to get a degree. You don’t have to join the streets.
Why Morehouse?
Amir’s mother says seniors have to leave Philadelphia because it’s not safe.
“I had some mixed feelings because you know he’s leaving,” Karlynne Staten said.
He’s going out of Philly. I love Philly to death but it’s not safe for him.
