“Every year brings new conversions” – Are you excited about that?

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Green Entrepreneur Columbia Climate School Kevin Webb explains his goal is to convert climate sinners and restore CO2 levels during the Little Ice Age.

Beyond climate change: What happens when we take control of the global thermostat?

As flooding subsides in Toronto, NYC experiences heaviest rain in an hour on record, Oregon continues to burn…

I am speaking from a privileged position. Over the past few years, I have invest in startups have a positive impact on ecology and climate. Some are working on electrification and efficiency, to reduce the need for oil and gas in the first place. Others are finding ways to effectively capture carbon dioxide in the ocean or atmosphere, so we can not only stop emissions, but also have a chance to bring our atmospheric levels back to ~ 280 parts per million (PPM) that was known to almost all human civilization until recently.

Personally, I’m optimistic. My basic rationale is as follows:

  • Climate change will get worse before it gets better. This is news that no one is paying attention to; The world continues to increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by the day, causing more heat from the sun to be trapped. This in turn disrupts the weather patterns, basins, ocean currents and more that humanity has built civilizations around. Even if we stopped emitting CO2 today, these effects would take decades, possibly centuries, to fully kick in. (All the more reasons to reach net-zero emissions as soon as possible.)
  • This means that every year brings new converts, who not only believe in climate change but also believe that they must personally participate in the solutions. Writers, politicians, artists, engineers, investors – the world needs big change and there’s room for everyone to bring their skills, values and perspectives. Countries and companies ignore these voters, employees, investors, regulators and customers will do so at their own risk.
  • We need to run back the clock. The CO2 levels of the “Goldilocks” in which most of humanity has existed (about the last 10,000 years, which saw the development of agriculture and cities) will be more and more attractive than in a few years and decades. next. (In principle, I believe 280 PPM should be the standard CO level.)
  • Technology is here. More will come. Building technology to slow, prevent, and reverse climate change must be good enough to drive consumer and business adoption. It cannot. Amidst inertia, subsidies, and legacy infrastructure, today’s entrepreneurs and technologists must actively deliver better. Doing so isn’t easy, but as the transition makes sense not only ethically but also financially, it begins to feel inevitable.

Personally, I am optimistic, we will continue to pump CO2 and greening The earth. And the climate crisis movement will disappear once even hardcore believers realize that it’s all just a burger with no big deal.
