Earlier in their conversation, Spence Jr was asked about playing against Terence Crawford, who holds the WBO belt. The two all-star weight class competitors are both top men in their divisions and the prospect of them being in the same ring together is a tantalizing prospect. But at one stage, due to different broadcasters and TV networks, it seems like a very unlikely fight. The landscape has now changed as Crawford is a free agent following a split with Top Rated.
Custer asked Spence Jr if we’ll get one of the biggest fights of the boxing century happening this year.
The WBC and IBF champion replied: “It is.
“It’s something I’m definitely looking forward to and that’s what we’re aiming for and after I get past Ugas it could be an easy fight to do.”
Spence points out that he wants to be undisputed and fight Crawford, which doesn’t mean he’s simply giving in to demands from the other side.
“It just depends on the rules between me and him. I will bend but I will not break. I’ll take off my coat but I won’t give it to you.
“I am looking forward to that fight. I think it’s a legacy fight for him and myself. And it was a great fight, I think. People want that fight, that’s the fight they really want. I think that could happen.”
Yordenis Ugas will do his best to make sure he’s running to become the undisputed welterweight champion after April 16. The undefeated 32-year-old later described the moment he was told he would not be able to fight Manny Pacquiao.
“We went to Vegas and saw the Commission doctor and [he] looked me in the eye for a minute and he was like I had some good news and I had some bad news. The bad news is there’s no way you can fight, the good news is it’s partially detached so we can put it back but there’s no way you can fight. There is a chance that you may lose your eyes. I can’t let you fight.
“In my head it’s like there’s another eye, I have two eyes, I can see the other eye! Looking back on it now, I’m glad I didn’t join the fight because it could have been my last fight and messed me up forever. ”
