Erickson Lubin has successfully stripped himself out of the picture, both figuratively and literally.
With the entire boxing world watching, the Florida-born boxer will lose in a stunning bout at the hands of Jermell Charlo in October 2017. While initially bewildered and acrimonious with the way things are, Lubin has shifted his focus to turning his career around.
So far so good, as the 26-year-old has had six impressive wins in a row. However, his Saturday could prove to be his toughest yet. On April 9, at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lubin will face off against the oddly tall Sebastian Fundora.
If Lubin secures victory, he refuses to look up and down the current 154-pound list of contenders for his next opponent. Instead, Lubin believes that as long as he takes care of the business this Saturday night, his chances of winning the world championship are undeniable.
“That has to happen next,” an animated Lubin said in an episode of Morning Kombat. “That has to be next. I have been number one for a while now in WBC. I think after the battle in Rosario I will get the winner Charlo/Castano. Obviously there is a draw. I’m not going to sit there and wait. So yeah, I fought Fundora, Fundora is a great fighter. He’s second in the WBC. And they’re putting on the WBC makeshift strap. ”
Charlo, as previously mentioned by Lubin, is currently taking his time by preparing himself to take on famous WBO tennis player Brian Castano. The two initially shared the ring in July 2021, with their duel ending in a controversial split decision draw. With two setups to get things running again on May 14, Lubin hopes that by toppling Fundora by nearly 6’6″, he will be seen as the clear and unique challenger to the winner.
At first glance, the enormity of the Fundora frame seems to pose a puzzling puzzle for Lubin to solve. However, despite his towering physique, Lubin believes he should have no problem downsizing his man, as long as he hits the 154-pound weight limit.
“I think this fight right here separates me from the group. I’m doing champ’s job, I’ve beaten top contender to top contender. They put another one in front of me. I feel like I can adjust to any style. As long as he stays on that scale at 154, we’ll have a fight. It’s really no problem for me.”
