Electric car owner shares strange trick to charge car faster

Is this fast-charging feature for electric vehicles (EVs) a smart move or a mistake?

Host of US YouTube channel EverythingEV tried an unusual trick that some people Jaguar I-Pace Electric SUVs are said to be able to shorten charging times at DC chargers.

This tip is simple: turn on your hazard lights and keep an eye on the charging time.

When tested on this 2019 Jaguar I-Pace, EverythingEV The presenter found that the electric SUV had a much higher peak charging rate with its hazard lights on, increasing from around 90kW to 100kW.

Small improvements were also noted during testing, increasing the charge time from 10 to 80 percent in 42 minutes – the fastest result he claimed to date.

That’s eight minutes faster than a recent test he performed on the same charger with the same I-Pace.

It’s worth noting that there can be inconsistencies between different chargers and even between different charging sessions at the same location, although this seems to happen quite often so there may be a reason.

It’s unclear why this trick works.

Electric car owners wanting to unlock faster charging capabilities is nothing new, with Tesla owners even demonstrating a trick by wrapping a wet towel around the end of the company’s Supercharger charging cord.

This reduces the temperature recorded from the cable, providing more power, but Tesla has warned against this practice as it is unsafe.
