When I think of baked beans, my mind conjures up images of backyard barbecues with paper plates and Midwest mosquitoes. What can I say? I’m a Missouri girl. But there are plenty of ways to serve these easy baked beans.

What to serve with baked beans:

  • burgers or other grilled meats
  • on top of sausage
  • BBQ sandwiches, like pulled pork
  • corn cake
  • on toast with a hard-boiled egg – if you feel like British

I think this easy baked bean recipe has two stages. The first stage is to cook everything in a pan or pan on the kitchen. If you stop there, these baked beans will be less thick and watery. It reminds me more of English baked beans at this point.

But the second stage is to bake them in the oven to thicken and deepen the flavor. The result is baked beans that feel just like what I usually make — a side dish to a BBQ meal. However, this recipe is delicious at both stages, so you can choose whichever option you prefer.

Homemade baked beans ingredients:

  • Navy beans
  • Bacon (or you can use bacon or pork belly)
  • Yellow onion
  • Green bell pepper
  • Garlic
  • BBQ sauce, store-bought or make your own
  • Dijon mustard
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Tomato sauce
  • Paprika
  • Chili powder
  • Cayenne

If you have leftovers, you can store the baked beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for at least three days and reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave if needed. You can also freeze these once they’re cooked, then defrost and reheat when you want to eat them.

If you make these baked beans, let us know what you think in the comments! Plus, I’m always interested in hearing how people living in different parts of the United States (or around the world) prepare recipes like this differently. So if you have a version you like, let us know how it’s different. so so. Emma
