Early Toyota bZ4X in Malaysia – tested on local roads; UMW Toyota installs chargers by launching


UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has announced that they have begun testing Toyota bZ4X on local roads ahead of its official launch this year, with several sample units already registered for the purpose – note the UMWT dash cam. This was revealed along with corporate multi-path strategy to support Malaysia’s goal of becoming a carbon neutral country by 2050.

The two units of the electric vehicle (EV) on display at UMWT’s office in Shah Alam are front-wheel drive and feature an electric motor with 204 PS (201 hp or 150 kW) and 266 Nm of torque. . Pictured here is an example in white, but there is also a gray spot in place, the latter seen before the official preview along with a blue unit.

Powering the electric motor is a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, for a range of up to 500 km according to WLTP standards. This setting is the same as that used in bZ4X Indonesian version was launched last November, priced at 1.19 billion rupiah (RM361,241).

bZ4X supports AC charging (Type 2 connection) up to 6.6 kW as well as DC fast charging (CCS2 connection) up to 150 kW, post-charge allows the battery to charge from 0-80 state % in just 30 minutes.

Currently, the company does not provide local specifications of the bZ4X, so what you see here does not necessarily reflect what customers will receive. Similarly, we don’t get other details like pricing or the exact time the EV will go on sale here. “As the infrastructure supporting BEV (battery-powered vehicles) improves, UMWT will launch a BEV model in the near future,” the company said in an official statement. It also notes that it supports the government’s goal of having 4,000 EV charging points by the end of the year, though it remains to be seen how many charging points it plans to establish.
