Draft MLS expansion for Charlotte FC ahead of the 2022 open season

Charlotte FC went away with three players and $900k in allocations to be used in squad building following the Open Draft held on Tuesday. It’s been a strong run for a team that is just over two months away from its first official game at DC United on February 26.

The team has been busy with lineups, with sporting director Zoran Krneta and new coach Miguel Angel Ramirez scouring the continent – and globally – for players to build their squad (updated list). under). They had the chance to add five new names from their pool of 258 players not covered by their MLS teams (see full list below).

But in addition to adding players to its roster, Charlotte FC also utilizes the draft to acquire assets and cash (allocations) by selecting and then trading the players who are on the wishlist of other clubs. Those deals are required to happen after the Extended Draft, but it’s a transaction that has become a fixture of recent expansion drafts.

How the Draft MLS Expansion Works

Under league rules, five clubs are exempt from exposing their roster to the Open Draft, as they lost players in last year’s edition to Austin FC. Those five clubs are LA Galaxy; Nashville SC; NY Red Bulls; City of Orlando; and the San Jose Earthquake.

The rest of the 22 MLS teams can only defend up to 12 players, revealing the rest can be selected by Charlotte in the Open Draft (complete the rules here).

Charlotte FC can only select a single player from any team’s unprotected list. And any team that has a declared player from their roster will be given $50,000 in general allotment from the league as compensation.
