DR Congo: Armed group attacks displace nearly 1 million people since January

An estimated 6.1 million people are internally displaced, 17 percent increase from October, according to its Displacement Tracking Matrix.

IOM speak civilians have been killed or forced from their homes due to increased violence and attacks by armed groups.

Deadly attack, unpredictable danger

At least 46 people were killed in the latest incident at a camp for evacuees in the eastern province of Ituri on Sunday.

IOM strongly condemns the attack, which is attributed to Cooperative pour le développement du Congo (CODECO), a coalition of militia groups.

“The recent horrific attack is a testament to the unbearable dangers that displaced people in the DRC face every day,” said Federico Soda, Director of the Department of Emergencies.

“The IOM strongly condemns this grave violation of international humanitarian law and reiterates that attacks on civilians may constitute a war crime. Coordinated efforts are needed to end the violence and help the Congolese people find peace.”

The humanitarian situation worsens

As conflict intensifies, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with millions facing severe food insecurity and other pressing needs. Altogether, more than 26 million people across the DRC need humanitarian aid.

Despite insecurity and limited access to parts of the country, IOM and its partners have worked to provide emergency relief to those displaced and those affected by violence.

The United Nations agency said this is scale-up activities this will enable a more effective crisis response to humanitarian emergencies caused by increased violence.
