Here’s just a taste of four of the trails for hiking with your dog.
Fort Funston Trail, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, San Francisco
What dog lovers can expect: A one-mile round trip with a 200-foot climb to the top of a small dog overlooking the San Francisco coast. Dogs can run off a leash on most interconnected hiking trails.
Lover’s Leap Trail, Custer State Park, South Dakota
What dog lovers can expect: Nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota’s 71,000-acre Custer State Park, the Lovers Leap Trail is a moderate to difficult 3 dog-friendly hike up to 4 miles. Dogs must be leashed.
Devil Canyon Scenic Area Trail, Ozark-St. Francis National Forest, Arkansas
What dog lovers can expect: A 4.6-mile moderately challenging loop located near Mountainburg. The trail includes two waterfalls for fun and cooling off. The area is dog-friendly, as long as the puppies are on a leash.
Bear Peak, Boulder, Colorado
What dog lovers can expect: From 8,461-foot views of Boulder, Bear Peak is a popular spot with locals. Dogs are allowed to drop the leash at different points on the trail, as long as they are within sight of the owner.
