What do dogs watch when they watch TV?
Dogs have dichroic vision, which means they only see shades of blue, yellow, and gray. Although they can see the images on the TV screen, they cannot understand them like humans. They can recognize familiar people, animals or objects on the screen, but they can’t understand the meaning or context of the images in the same way that we can, explains Ron.
Can dogs recognize other dogs on TV?
Yes, said Ron. Dogs can recognize other dogs on TV by their appearance and body language.
Why do some dogs watch TV and others don’t?
Some dogs are more attracted to sounds and movements on TV than others. Dogs that are attracted to TV are either curious, social, or reactive. Ron explains that dog breed, age, personality, and past experience play a role in whether or not they enjoy watching TV. For example, a herding dog might respond to fast movement on the screen, while an older dog with less energy might ignore it.
Should I leave the TV on for my dog to watch?
“The dogs can feel comfortable with TV when the owner is not at home,” says Ron. He explains that sounds and movements can comfort some dogs, but not all. If your dog reacts to the TV – barking or jumping at it – they may be calmer without the TV while you are away. If you decide to let your dog watch the TV, don’t make it too loud.
What do dogs like to watch on TV?
Choose the program that is right for your dog and will not cause him to become distressed or agitated. Ron said programs are a good feature selection:
- animal
- acquaintance
- familiar objects
- lots of movement, such as moving the ball or acting (only for some dogs)
