District Attorney says:
Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, allegedly opened fire on March 22 at a King Soopers store in Boulder that left 10 people dead, including a store manager and a police officer. He faces a total of 54 counts, including ten counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
“We appeared at a public hearing earlier today to talk about the capacity assessment that recently returned in the case of the shooter King Soopers. In the second competency assessment sequence. of the court, the doctor is a much-respected professional. Dougherty found the shooter incompetent to stand trial,” said Dougherty.
This is Alissa’s third review, according to Dougherty. The shooting suspect has been evaluated by a defense expert, two doctors from a state hospital, and most recently a doctor selected by prosecutors.
“All four of those doctors, over the past three months, have determined that he is not fit to stand trial,” he said.
Dougherty goes on to point out the difference between competence and madness.
“Capability is different from dementia, or a mental health impairment,” said Dougherty. So we’re not talking about what he did on March 22. We’re talking about whether he was. Can we afford to stand trial right now?”
Doctors determined he had deteriorated while at Boulder County Jail and needed medical treatment, he added. But based on the latest assessments, Dougherty said he “believes” Alissa will be rehabilitated.
According to Dougherty, Alissa is being taken to a state hospital for treatment and the next capacity update in court is set for March 15, 2022.
