There’s an interesting video from the wedding photographer and educator taylor jacksonthis makes an important point about why we are all Sony shooters, whether we like it or not.
In her video, Taylor points out that we may not know that many other manufacturers’ cameras have Sony sensors. This is largely because Sony not only makes some of the most popular cameras itself, but also manufactures and sells image sensors that are being used by other camera and imaging companies.
Camera systems from Nikon, Fujifilm, Hasselblad, DJI, Phase One, and even the most popular camera on the planet, Apple’s iPhone, all use Sony image sensors. It really shows the potential that Sony can not only lead the world in imaging innovation, but also act as a facilitator, allowing other camera companies to use Sony’s sensors to innovate.
Keeping those considerations in mind, Taylor may be right in assuming that most of us are already Sony shooters, whether we like it or not. Let’s hope that Sony continues to learn from the trends and innovations that other camera companies are creating with its sensors, and can make similar innovations with its own cameras.
I’d really like to see open-port video capture, tailored video support features, the internal ProRes video codec, and more advanced AI features baked into Sony’s cameras. Adding these additional tweaks and providing more consistent firmware updates are key opportunities for Sony to stay at the forefront of today’s highly competitive creative landscape.
There’s no doubt that Sony has the power to influence the way the world perceives and creates images, but not everyone knows that it also drives much of the rest of the camera world with its image sensors. itself, it’s important that Sony stays true to its commitment to being the “spearhead” of innovation with its own cameras.
